Margie and I extend our deepest condolences to Jane Martens and the family of the Rev. Dr. Ray Martens+, who passed away on Saturday, October 5.
Much of what I know about the history of the Missouri Synod in Lee County (and Texas) comes from the writings of his grandfather, the Rev. Gotthilf Birkmann, who served as pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Fedor for many years. Dr. Marten’s work in translating those, and in writing Worthy of Double Honor, a biography of Rev. Birkmann, made them accessible to me (since I don’t speak/read German fluently). For that work, I am very, very grateful.
May he rest in peace, and Light Everlasting shine upon him.
“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.”
